The Essential Isabella L Bird Collection eBook Isabella Lucy Bird
I bought this book mainly to read about Hawaii prior to modernization. The author's writing was so detailed and descriptive of her travels that I was amazed. To think that in 1873 this lady carried a fountain pen and wrote while she was essentially in the "wilds" of Hawaii for 6 months, traveling on horseback to remote villages, swimming through nearly impassible streams, trying to be ladylike with her dress and manners among the natives (who thought this amusing)- is almost beyond belief. I am impressed with her vast knowledge of plants; often referring to them by their scientific names, how she describes the natives, their customs and language, their food, the political climate of the time, the detailed descriptions of the volcanoes and waterfalls, among hundreds of other intricate details- makes this book an invaluable reference for anyone interested in the early history of the Hawaiian islands.Product details

The Essential Isabella L Bird Collection eBook Isabella Lucy Bird Reviews
Havent a clue how to pronounce the very long words--- not necessary --so of course lose a lot of the story----she truly was amazing and accomplished ---
Enjoyed her Rocky Mountain Story most of all----
She was an amazing woman, although some of her opinions of cultures are dated, but fascinating. She was so intrepid! A great insight into an unusual woman from another time. I have the edition. Wish I could see all of her drawings.
This is the most amazing travel report I have ever read. In spite of being written more than a century ago, the conflicts of Prtsia--Iran-- Turkey, Kurdistan,Armenia remain the same.
The lack of political correctness was a welcome feature as it allowed the author to express her feelings about the inhabitants of the countries visited. I especially enjoyed her accounts of the Aino people in Japan.
I have more to say, but it doesn't fit in a short space.
