When Mary Two Dogs' parents died, she went to live with her Aunt Janet, a woman she barely knew. Her parents had been musicians, and they traveled a lot, but New York was home. Now, she's living in a podunk, backward, Georgia town with her aunt, an FBI agent working undercover to solve a string of racially motivated murders. But it gets worse, because when things get too hot, Janet decides to send Mary to the rez for her own protection. Mary doesn't know anything about her people, the reservation, or the strange woman she's going to be living with for who knows how long. She's been harrassed by some of the local kids, but she's met a nice boy and she doesn't want to go. Too bad Janet is determined. Montana isn't like any place Mary's ever been. Mountains to the West, acres of rolling grassland to the East, and strange people who speak a language she's never learned...but their speech is slow and gentle, like her parents' after a bottle of wine, and they welcome her like a lost child. Mary's adopted grandmother determines that Mary needs to learn who she is and where she belongs, so Mikusa teaches her how to build her own sweat lodge and find herself, and in doing so, Mary learns more than she expected. Mary's introduction to the ways of her people gives her strength to face the future when Janet is found brutally beaten. Together, Mary, Mikusa and Mary's new uncle, Frank Spotted Pony, race to Georgia to be by Janet's side. There, Mary discovers that Steve, the boy she liked, is missing and Janet might die. If she does the murderer may never be found. What good is finding her place among her people if everyone Mary cares about leaves her behind?

I really wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book, however the more I read, I found the story itself was about a young Native girl discovering who she was, and where she came from. Taking lessons from the past in form of spirituality, memory, and vision quests, as well, as lessons from the present...

Assiniboin Girl eBook Kathi Wallace Reviews

I enjoyed reading this book and found it hard to put down. This is a coming of age story of a young woman who has found herself in a situation where she has the opportunity to learn about her family's heritage. Even though the story is about a young Native American woman, the story is relevant to all of us, regardless of race or ethnic background. Sometimes we resist who we are for a variety of reasons. Ms. Wallace teaches us that going back to our roots can result in great rewards and help us to understand that each of us has something uniquely profound to offer.
I'm not sure what I expected when I picked up Assiniboin Girl, but this wasn't it. It was better. In the novel, Wallace takes you through a range of fully-developed worlds, dragging you along with Mary as she travels through them all. We begin in an authentic southern town, then travel to the res and back, in a whirlwind that sucks you in. It is definitely one of those stories that keeps you reading long after you promised to yourself to stop. Part contemporary coming-of-age, part mystery, and a hint of the paranormal thrown in for good measure, it is definitely on my recommend list.
Kathi Wallace spins a timeless tale of a coming of age, an especially difficult journey for Mary Two Dogs who has only recently comes to terms with a tragic loss. Between the panoramic airplane ride, the lush 'rez' (all but an alien world to Mary), and the spiritual explorations, Assiniboin Girl not only follows Mary's growth, it also underscores how cruel the world can sometimes be. But as carefully as Mrs. Wallace paints us a picture of bleak racial prejudice, and injustice, she just as careful to offer us the solution. Never heavy handed or accusing, the story ends in satisfyingly simple conclusion, leaving me to googling for what other Kathi Wallace titles I could load up on my e-reader. An absorbing, well crafted story for all ages, subtle use of symbolism and neat, tidy prose.
What a great book and it taught me a little about the Native American culture. While living with her Aunt, Mary was always bullied because she looked and acted different. When she went to the reservation, she learned things about her self and her heritage that made her stronger and she was able to face her fears. The book combined spiritual and mysterious themes with a little bit of romance that makes it a great read especially for the YA reader. I look forward to reading Kati's newest novel Keeper of Memories.
Mary Two Dogs grew up in New York City, fairly unaware of her Assiniboin-Sioux heritage. After a terrible accident claimed the lives of her parents, she went to live with her aunt. However, her aunt is involved in a situation that is no longer safe for Mary, and Mary is forced to go spend time with extended family on the reservation. Here she is forced to confront her heritage and remember the ways of her people.

What an amazing, beautiful book this is! Often, young adult literature lacks diversity, particularly compelling stories that the youth can relate to, so I am thrilled that here we find a book about a young female reconnecting with the ways of her native people. I love the fact that the character of Mary is such a typical city girl. She seems to have given very little thought to the fact that she is Sioux, and knows little to nothing about her heritage, something to which youth from all cultures can relate.

When Mary goes to the reservation, she learns so much about her people and their ways, and the books takes on such a spiritual tone. It is almost supernatural, but not in a paranormal way, more in the ancestral spiritual way so common among Native American people. The book is moving, and beautiful. Kathi Wallace weaves such a graceful story, but in a way that makes it compelling to young readers.

There is a strong subtext of tolerance in the book, both between the Sioux and the white man, and back in Georgia between the townsfolk any anyone who is different from them. There are very powerful lessons to be learned about knowing one's roots, remembering where one comes from, and learning from the mistakes of the past to be found within the lines of this book.

This is a fantastic book for parents or educators to use for purposes of multicultural educational lessons, as well as just good young adult literature. I personally also enjoyed it as an adult reader. Overall, a powerful, moving book.
This was a great book. The details of the Alaskan outback were interesting and the plot of the story was superb. This is a good read for young and old.
This is an incredible book! A must read. Parents should read and share with their children. There are no more words needed.
